When he wasn’t working on the newsletter, he helped put out the prison’s newspaper, and he launched his own investigative bulletin about the private-prison industry. Declining to have a TV in his cell, he read everything he could get his hands on. He especially relished Victor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning” and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.” (In a letter to me, Friedmann quoted “Denisovich”: “How can you expect a man who’s warm to understand a man who’s cold?”)
